"The Water Lilies" (Nympheas) of Claude Monet
From Musée de l’Orangerie for the Réunion des Musées Nationaux

A creation both monumental and intimate, the "Water Lilies" is the expression and culmination of the artistic thought of Claude Monet. A wild project for a painter who wanted to explore all the variations of light in his garden in Giverny, "the Water Lilies" is displayed in two oval rooms and invite the visitor for endless contemplation.
Just after the Great War, Monet wanted his work to take on both aesthetic and poetic dimensions to offer a place of peace and of meditation to Parisians. In choosing the Orangerie of the Tuileries to house his work devoted to nature and peace, Claude Monet hoped to create harmony between the "Water Lilies" and its enclosure. Flanked by the Seine on the south and hidden away on a high terrace of the garden, the Orangerie offers a setting away from the city ideal for contemplation. The "Water Lilies" has been exhibited there since 1927.
