Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, 1848–1933) embodied the artistic spirit of America's Gilded Age. In the early 1890s, he developed a method of blending different colors together in glass while it was in a molten state, calling the results ''Favrile,'' for which he was widely celebrated. This rich blue shawl evokes the stylized peacock feathers on his iridescent Favrile vase (ca. 1900) in The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection.
